Recent statistics by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found:

Public DNA laboratories experienced a 73% increase in casework
Public DNA laboratories experienced a 135% increase in their casework backlogs
Rape and homicide cases alone make up approximately 350,000 cases of this backlog
The FBI laboratory alone has a backlog of over 1000 DNA cases
