DNA identity testing is a sophisticated and powerful scientific tool. Understanding and using this technology requires specialized knowledge and skills. Orchid Cellmark provides consulting services for the following applications:
- Review of DNA results conducted by another laboratory
- Preparation for depositions, hearings, and trials
- Re-analysis of DNA evidence, if needed, or DNA testing of previously untested biological evidence
In order to review the results of testing from another laboratory, the following items need to be examined:
A complete copy of the case folder which includes:
- Chain of custody documents
- Laboratory notes
- Statistical calculations
- Worksheets
- Good quality photographs, computer images and/or copies of the primary data including slot blots, RT-PCR results, silver-stained gels, STR electropherograms, (Note: in many instances, photocopies of the analytical results are not sufficient for review purposes. Please also request that all analytical results be properly labeled as to the kit and platform used and date of analysis)
- A copy of the Standard Operating Procedures(s) used including all protocols related to evidence handling and testing procedures
- A copy of the database frequency tables used to generate the statistical frequencies cited in this case
Although these materials are generally sufficient for a scientist to form an opinion about the results of the testing, in some cases it may be necessary to request additional discovery. This information could consist of quality assurance programs and independent audits as well as laboratory design, staffing, and case management issues.
