Orchid Cellmarks Biotracks program is an evidence matching service to help solve property crimes and to help prevent further property crimes and even more serious crimes.

The first such program was implemented by Orchid Cellmark in collaboration with the New York Police Department. The programs success is outlined below:

500 pieces of evidence from 300 cases were analyzed
185 DNA profiles were generated
145 of those DNA profiles were uploaded to the CODIS database
Hits on 44 samples resulted (=33% cold hit rate)

The Statistics Pertaining to Property Crime:

The top 10 percent of burglars commit an average of approximately 250 burglaries per year
Property crime perpetrators often graduate to more violent crimes including rape, assault, armed robbery, and murder
Property crimes tie up valuable police resources and cost society billions of dollars in property damage and insurance costs
